A Living Continuation of Maldivian Heritage

Ulifushi Integrated Village is shaped by a deep respect for the past and a commitment to its continuity. It is not conceived as a destination apart, but as a place that emerges from the cultural, historical, and natural fabric of the Maldives.

Located within Haa Alifu Atholhu, a region closely tied to the legacy of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the island carries a history that is both significant and enduring. These waters and shores have long held stories of resilience, leadership, and transformation, forming part of the wider narrative that defines the Maldivian identity.

For a time, this land remained untouched and dormant. What exists today is the result of careful restoration, where the island has been brought back to life through indigenous planting, ecological sensitivity, and a deliberate effort to preserve what is inherently Maldivian. The landscape is not designed, but revived, allowing native vegetation, natural systems, and open space to guide its form.

At its core, Ulifushi is guided by a philosophy of renewal. This is reflected not only in the land, but in the way of life it supports. Traditional knowledge systems, from healing practices to craftsmanship and daily rituals, are not presented as heritage alone, but lived as part of the present. In this way, the village becomes a space where past and present exist in quiet continuity.

Architecture across the island draws from vernacular Maldivian forms, reinterpreted with clarity and restraint. Spaces unfold through thresholds, courtyards, and open structures that respond to climate, community, and the rhythms of island living. Each element is considered in relation to its environment, allowing built form and landscape to exist in balance.

Equally, Ulifushi is shaped by people. Local knowledge is carried forward through those who live and work here, from healers and craftspeople to cooks and storytellers. Their presence ensures that what is shared remains authentic, grounded, and connected to lived experience rather than abstraction.

Ulifushi Integrated Village is, in essence, a living landscape. A place where land, culture, and knowledge continue to evolve together. Where restoration is ongoing, and where the spirit of the Maldives is not recreated, but allowed to endure.
